I relate this song to my dad’s battle with cancer. He lived in another state the last several years so I wish I could have been there for him. He finally took his own life because he couldn’t take the pain. He felt “if I can’t be my own, I’d feel better dead.” This song and many others hit me hard. Very fond childhood memories with my dad, growing up listening to bands like this. I thank God for those memories.

Hi, first of all I am very sorry for your loss. It is not easy living so far apart from each other. Cancer is such a difficult battle to face, not just for the one being ill but definitely for their loved ones as well.
It is good to read you have fond childhood memories of your dad, I hope it can help you in the grieving and healing process. Are there any songs you relate to that can help you relive the good memories?
Wishing you well, and feel free to reach out to us if you need support.

Hello and thanks for the post!

I think music is such a great thing, as it allows people to “make it their own” and relate to it in ways that are (hopefully anyway) healing and positive. It sounds like Layne’s words in this song have done that for you, and I’m glad it brought our paths together!

When I try to put myself in your situation, I feel lots of different emotions that I’m sure pale in comparison to yours! But I can understand if you were feeling “hate” and “bitterness” toward the cancer, and if you watched your Dad suffer through it, I can also see how you might feel some relief when it stops, although the grief and shock of suicide would cause even more on top of all that! Put simply, “wow, what a whirlwind of emotions that must have been!”

It feels like you have stayed positive and I love that you have fond childhood memories with your dad! Be proud of those times and hold them close, be kind to yourself going forward, and I wish you the best!

That’s so rough. I’m glad you have those memories to hold on to, and I’m glad that music was a way you two connected. Such a powerful experience
