It’s unfortunate that when it comes to addiction some must die so that others See and make a choice to live. 20yrs ago I was arrested in Los Angeles for possession of heroin and found myself cuffed to a bench facing a poster on the wall that read "Maybe the purpose of your life was meant to be a warning to others. I was in my 30’s then. " What if I’m stuck in this role for life no matter what I do? I’m 56, been arrested in 5 states, done time in 2 of them and I’m still an active addict who loves to get high despite consequences! Some people are meant to be pilots, doctors, therapists, writers, even lawyers. Some, like myself, are seemingly meant to be the Warning to others; a living, breathing PSA potentially carrying more weight than a TV, billboard or radio ad. Should I embrace this role now or hold out for divine intervention? It doesn’t even have to be divine really…

Hi there,

I’m proud of you for owning your mistakes and working to improve yourself. Media and stereotypes are the main reasons why people view addiction as something negative. I think people negatively view addiction due to being afraid of someone harming their physical & mental health. Many famous people died tragically due to addiction. There are many reasons why people develop an addiction. That’s why I tried not to be judgemental and imagine being in their place. People have no clue that addiction isn’t easy to battle against. Currently, it has been 2-4 weeks since I stopped taking drugs due to addiction & nine months of being sober. People must understand it’s up to make mistakes when trying to be cold-turkey & sober. I have been there. Mistakes help us learn to become a better person.

Addiction can help positively transform others. Many inspirational speakers who once struggled with addiction are now making a massive difference in people’s lives. I’m not asking you to become a TED speaker. Your actions can profoundly impact others’ lives in various ways. I believe that those who struggle with challenges like addiction are incredibly brave. Mistakes and flaws are what make us truly human. I bet someone reading your comment on social media has already felt inspired by you, like me.
