WyKisha R. McKinney is a nonprofit leader with over 20 years of experience in program management, community engagement, and strategic planning.

There is a duality when it comes to our mental health. There is a positive and negative. WyKisha shares her experience with mental health and suicide through the lens of Pisces by Jinger.

I live in Tx but nowhere near Houston , kind of wish i did, Mrs. McKinney sounds like someone I would love to talk to , Where I live the only mental health advocates that are available is MHMR and if you are not prescribed medication then you do not qualify for services , They took me off all of my meds that i had been taking my whole life ( im 53 ) in 2017 stating that they felt that they were doing me more harm than good. I have been doing ok i guess but I honestly feel as though I am losing that grip lately

Tatiana’s lyrics are always a good choice for these discussions because Tatiana is so open about her anxieties she goes through as a performer, as an introvert and as a Russian from war torn Ukraine who rose above her situation to come to where she is. In my experience she is truly the most impressive human being I have ever met. Strong, talented, smart, creative and able to go out every night on stage despite her aversion to crowds and put on a dynamic show as the center of attention. Also imperfect and not afraid to say so.

This is so cool… conversations about metal and mental health. I don’t claim to be mentally healthy… anything but. But as someone that metal music, the heavier the better, has literally kept him alive for over 30 years, gave me a voice to scream with, gave me an outlet for the feelings that built up inside me over the course of my lifetime…

It takes music that makes you want to beat someone with a sledgehammer to keep you from actually doing it, whether that person is someone else, or yourself.

Although she said it was a shock, she seemed pretty chilled, her facial reaction was like “Huh?” Lol. One of the most composed reactions I’ve seen to Tati. I love her interpretation of the lyrics. Many people associate the lyrics just with Tati, and how she is a Pisces. But we can associate the lyrics with anyone. When she said that there is a part of you, when you’re going through depression or contemplating suicide, that is hurting, it hit me and brought back a memory of thinking that as a young man. I don’t think that anymore, but when she said that, it resonated with me and I didn’t think of that or associated that with this song.

If you want a great song to ease people into metal, and which deals positively with mental health, exploring themes of despair and anger, to joy and self-worth, you NEED to check out “Edge of the World” and “We the United” by the Japanese band LOVEBITES (they sing in English, but you may still need to pull up lyrics). They also have several other songs that deal with mental health issues, such as depression and the fear of asking for help (“Shadowmaker”), and grief, acceptance, and self-love (“Glory to the World”), and dignity in death (“Swan Song”). Not only are they virtuoso musicians, but they are a very positive force in the world of heavy metal. They are also best experienced live (though one of the links below is to a music video).

Hi there, greetings from UK
May I recommend two songs from a symphonic metal band called Nightwish. They are both live performances

Dead Boy’s Poem https://youtu.be/S8E3L7ggLMM?si=Wpqi55iYAaF2nz6N
When the keyboardist (Tuomas) was asked how he would like to be remembered he wrote this song in the form of a suicide note

The Poet And The Pendulum https://youtu.be/iEzZRMthhXU?si=FHEnH-vau_VyqYZh
This is a deep song reflecting the hate directed at the keyboardist (Tuomas) after the band had fired their first singer. It goes through the gambit of emotions felt at that time

Both of these songs deal with mental health issues

Tatjiana is badass!..

Is Jinjer Metal? Thats for me the question. Reaktion is good. But Metal is a bit others

SpiritBox with Tatiana (Jinger) - Circle With Me would be a great way to experience two of the best Metal Female Vocalists currently (In my opinion) https://youtu.be/TK81YePqfZE?si=B-M9iYHueV_hk0A5

Taylor should do one for Every Time I Die - Map Change. You know these guys, lets hear it!!!

Jinjer is such a solid band.

Should have her check out “Fade to Black” by Metallica, would like her perspective on suicide.

People usually gloss over the lyrical value of this song because of the ‘shock factor’ so I appreciate yall taking the time to dig into them.

Metal music is the only reason im still alive today.

I would give an suggestion. Nightwish Poet and the Pendulum. The song is about a suicide, so maybe that is too triggering. But Tuomas was deppresed and was having those feelings, but he did what any artist do, write a song about it. There are some live versions out there, it is a song that they don’t play that often.

another good mteal for her would be 5 finger death punch wrong side of heaven
