Therapist Reacts to Closer by Nine Inch Nails

Right where you belong off With Teeth is an absolute song to check out but not the V2 version

Trent gets so dismayed by how everyone misinterprets this song as a straight-up sex anthem. I’m sure he’d be incredibly happy and relieved to see this, seeing people like you who are smart enough to understand what he was actually trying to do with this song.

A doctor once told me that addiction is not so much a disease as it is a “dis-ease.” Very cool Taylor did not shy away from reacting to this song. The song works quite well as a framework, meaning if you tweak the lyrics, it could be about drugs or alcohol or body image or exercise or work or (close your eyes if you’re sensitive)…recovery. Anyone who has ever sat in a circle in a church basement knows what I’m talking about. Listening to this tune out of context can be misleading. “The Downward Spiral” may be the last truly great concept album. It’s disturbing; however, SPOILER ALERT…it ends with the lyric “If I could start again…A million miles away…I would keep myself…I would find a way.”

You should try Somewhat damaged by Nine Inch Nails as well, really amazing.

That’s a damn 30 yr old song. Ah yes, the tunes of my teens.

Anyone let her know this album was recorded in the Manson house?

absolutely love this breakdown. BUT, can we fix the records over your left shoulder. I’m worried about them.

Try dissecting the NiN album Year Zero, and the rabbit hole of a ARG to go along with it. Good luck

Head Like A Hole is my personal favorite, but this one is very iconic as well

The “fuck you like an animal” line was indeed the most talked about at the time but I did also notice the “help me” which let me know there is something else going on. These days, the line that stands out to me most is “I’ve got no soul to sell” which is the ultimate state of desperation, being so lowly, worthless and awful even the Devil doesn’t want you, and gives a direct conceptual/theological counterpoint to “you get me closer to God.”

You let me violate you

You let me desecrate you

You let me penetrate you

You let me complicate you - My favourite four lines of lyrics of all time from my favourite musician of all time, Trent Reznor.

Now try Damaged by assemblage 23… it’s pure poetry.

Why does NIN kinda remind me of Marilyn Manson!?

Such a great song to jam too…the video…not so much!! It give you the pleasure of a great beat and the pain of the “art” of the video. The most disturbing thing about this video is the child in the seat…just so uncomfortable to me. Reason is I was working my former best friends PC and found GIGS of CP on his hard drive! The things I saw I will never get over and it traumatized me so much I do not have intimate relationships anymore…well that and horrible divorce…when I confronted him about it he told me he was addicted to all kinds of porn…as evident by what I found…he couldn’t help him self because he was also addicted to Meth and Crack…and both led him to do things…“out of his control”. His ex gf found out from me and she talked to her daughter…and yep…he is in prison now for CM. Lost my best friend and if that wasn’t enough…my life is changed for ever.

Try Something I Can Never Have by NIN

I remember watching this video when it first came out on MTV and feeling like I finally found something that explained how I felt inside. I was 12 years old I think?

Actually, it is the not-self that is responsible for pain; people generally confuse the self with the not-self.

How has a white 40ish y/o educated American woman not heard this song?
