The spiral reference is to the Fibonacci spiral. But is ties back into so much of our daily life.
It’s spiraling from the inside to the outside. If you do the opposite you get out of control. If you spiral this way you can grow and learn.
Part of what makes Tool so special and unique is their ability to use odd time signatures. Not having things sound just like everything else on out there makes you really listen and pay attention. Of course it helps that they are 4 of that best musicians on the planet and write beautiful music.
My favorite part of this is the chorus when the time signature goes 7/8 8/8 9/8. It’s hard to count it out, but it feels so great sonically.

A controlled spiral can be an amazing feeling. Stunt driving and race drivers do it all the time. There’s something exhilarating about knowing your car’s tires are losing they’re grip on the road but if you let it happen you can drift and still be in control and accomplish things most people are afraid to try.
