Sober by Tool very powerfully expresses the difficult cycle of addiction. Most of the time people begin using substances to try to cope with the negative feelings they are experiencing. Then when they try to stop using the substance they are left with the pain, and that pain often brings back the desire to use.
That is part of the reason why remaining Sober can be so difficult, because an individuals main coping skill is being taken from them, and they may not have better skills to cope with negative feelings yet.
This song gives us insight into how strong the addictive voice can be and encourages us to fight back against it by remembering what we want to achieve and who we want to be?
