Trying out a Safety Plan for the first time

HeartSupport Safety Plan

This is my 7-step plan to keep me safe in difficult moments I face. I’ve thought through these steps in advance to make it easier for myself to get help when I need it.

Signs that a crisis may be developing (thoughts, images, mood, situation, behavior).

  • Sign 1 - mood swings
  • Sign 2 - suicidal/worsening intrusive thoughts
  • Sign 3 - delusions/paranoia

STEP 2 - Internal Coping Strategies

Things I can do to take my mind off problems without contacting another person (relaxation technique, physical activity, etc.)

  • Strategy 1 - drawing/painting
  • Strategy 2 - watching a movie
  • Strategy 3 - listening to music

STEP 3 - Worth Living For

Things that are most important to me and worth living for (these can be big or small, anything from loved ones to your morning coffee)

  • Live For 1 - My friends
  • Live For 2 - My family
  • Live For 3 - My goats
  • Live For 4 - New experiences
  • Live For 5 - Helping the world

STEP 4 - Supporters

People whom I can ASK FOR HELP (friends or family who you can call at anytime for support)

  • Supporter 1 - my therapist
  • Supporter 2 - my friends
  • Supporter 3 - my sister

STEP 5 - Professional Help

Professionals or agencies I can contact in a crisis

  • Dr. Alexander
  • A Hospital/911
  • Preferred Crisis Service (Choose one of the below)
    • (Text) Crisis Textline - text HOME to 741741
    • (Call) Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-TALK (8255)

STEP 6 - Safe Environment

Things I can do to make the environment safe

  • Safety 1 - Hide anything sharp objects
  • Safety 2 - Stay inside the house/in a safe location

STEP 7 - My Signature

By inputting my forum username below, I am committing to utilizing this safety plan in my next high intensity moment when I need support.

Well done @Thistle for filling this Safety Plan. There’s a lot of good stuff there and it seems that you really have a good understanding of how the thoughts/urges appear to you. It will keep serving you whenever you feel more vulnerable or on edge.

I hope you will take some time to acknowledge how brave this step is, and to simply celebrate it. It’s tough to accept to make this kind of contract with ourselves, especially as we know how quick and intense spiraling down can be.

You got this, friend. :hrtlegolove:

PS - Goats? How amazing! :hrttaylove:
