I was homeless for almost 15 years after I was done serving. Trying to get any kind of help from the VA feels like a job. My situation is a little better now, I’ve had my own place for a couple years but I hate being alive. I’ve been trying to get therapy but I’ve been waiting for over a year for something to open up and they said it probably won’t be until next year before I can start

Hey there.

I am so very sorry youre struggling with this and the VA seems to be less than helpful. I have had family and friends with similar experiences. i cannot begin to imagine how hard it was for you to adapt back to civilian life after serving and then trying to do so while homeless too. You definitely show resilience. I’m really glad to hear your housing situation is better but I ache to hear you say you hate being alive. You are so special and I personally I am so very grateful youre still with us.

I dont know much about VA services but i would contact them again and let them know your mental health symptoms are becoming more intense and youre not sure if you can wait til then and ask if they could maybe refer you out if you cant see their therapist sooner? I know theres some therapists out there like Charlie Health that does virtual services specifically for veterans and their families.

Until then, we are always here to listen and i hope you continue to reach out via the support wall or through the Heart Support mentor program when you need it. We would love to be here for you on those darker days.

I want to start by saying thank you so much for your service and all that you have done for our country. I have had multiple family members that served and I know that it is not an easy task to be done.

I am so sorry that the VA has not done more to help you get acclimated back to civilian life, but I am also glad to hear that you are in a better living situation now. I also very sorry to hear that you hate being alive, my heart goes out to you. I am glad that you are here and that we are able to have this conversation. I commend you for wanting to go to therapy and wanting to get yourself better. I am also sorry that through the VA, you are having to wait instead of getting the help that you want.

If the VA isn’t doing what you need them to do, I would see about finding a therapist not through the VA so you can talk to someone and get the help that you are asking for. Heart Support is partners with Better Help which is an online therapy company and you are able to speak with licensed therapists in the comfort of your own home. You can also look into other therapy options if you would rather talk to someone face to face.

I am happy that you are alive and like TenaciousGrace said, we are always here to help support you whenever you need us. You do not need to go through anything alone, because you are not alone!
