Therapist analyzes the lyrics to Down In A Hole by Alice In Chains to discuss how the the fantasy of being rescued a certain way often prevents us from seeing the reality of the rescue in front of us. We can use this song to grieve that the reality of an instantaneous rescue isn’t possible and start to clear our vision to see the possibility for rescue in front of us!

Foster The People “pumped up kicks”

So close to 3 libras I’m giddy with anticipation

AIC and Pearl Jam’s unplugged are the best moments of MTV.

Alice in Chains I think is the best grunge band of all time. Raw emotion in any song you could choose to listen to. No Excuses would be a great song to do, Don’t Follow would probably make you cry as well. Very well written and put together with the best group of musicians out of Seattle for that time period.

Also, I don’t know how I would be able to make this happen but I would love to have her as my therapist. I need one and I’v been a fan of these videos since I saw her pop up on my youtube feed. I feel like we would get along and be able to talk very easily which is what I’v been looking for. So if you read this Taylor reach out!

My depression improved last night in the wee hours. There’s hope for America. Maybe there’s hope for me too

This was my go to song for so many years and still is some days, today is one of those days

Please do Blow up the outside world or zero chanche by sound garze

@heartsupport I feel this song tells my story. I was in an accident at work that took me to a dark place. Since 2016 I have isolated with no light to see. It cost my marriage and livelihood.

Ease listen to Chris Stapelton, Fire Away. You’ll NEVER be the same after.

I always thought the longing to be back in the womb was a way to start over, a rebirth. I also think the line, “I’ve eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste” is a reference to reaching the heights of success yet still not making you feel any better. It didn’t change anything

I was with Mike Starr 9 days before he passed here in Utah, such a tragic end for everyone.

I love that you’re doing Alice In Chains. Please do “Rotten Apple”. Such a great addiction song, that very few understand. Lots to unpack in that one. Even the vibe of the instrumental parts take you to that point where you feel the hopelessness of being trapped.

I know Jerry says that he wrote this song about an ex-gf but, tbh, the lyrics fit Layne’s situation at that time so well, I’ve often thought that the ex-gf story might’ve been a cover for Jerry writing a song about Layne. I mean, Jerry was watching his friend’s addiction slowly kill him and you know there were a lot of emotions there. Pair that with the fact that most of the album this song is from, “Dirt,” is about Layne and his addiction, life and death, etc. and it makes sense, thematically, that this song would also be about Layne. Maybe Jerry just didn’t want to tell Layne that, or maybe it was a touchy subject to talk about with the press at the time they wrote the album. Idk. But I think most people who hear this just assume it HAS TO be about Layne and are surprised when they find out it’s supposedly just a breakup song about a girl.

E.g. When he sings the line, “You don’t understand who they thought I was supposed to be,” it makes me think of the pressure of celebrity and the expectations put on Layne bc of how highly regarded his singing and AiC’s music was – the type of pressure that could drive someone to seek escape into drugs – more than it sounds like something you’d say to/about a girl who dumped you. Or, like, the line “I’ve eaten the sun, so my tongue has been burned of the taste” sounds, to me, WAY more like it’s about doing heroin and not being able to find enjoyment in anything else than it does about being bummed about breaking up with a girl.

I guess it’s possible that the “gf breakup” lyrics are hugely coincidental or we all read into it bc of what we know about Layne’s story, but I’m skeptical. Or maybe Jerry’s just really good at writing doubles and it’s both.

Even if it wasn’t written about Layne, though, I think part of the reason the song works so well is because he can obviously FEEL those lyrics and put himself and his situation right inside them when he sings it, regardless of what the song is allegedly “really” about.

Also, every time I watch this Unplugged, I can’t help but notice how often Jerry looks over at Layne and looks sad. It could be that he’s just making sure Layne is still sitting upright (bc, reportedly, Layne had to get a fix before the show so he could get through it, which is part of why he seems barely there), but those looks always make me think that Jerry knew this was the end and he was saying goodbye to his friend with this final performance.

Nice reaction. Notice that Lane is reading lyrics. With one foot in the grave, he paints an absolute masterpiece. This concert would become a tribute to Lanes immense talent.

You should try alice in chains nutshell.

Its hard to listen to Layne, cause you can feel the pain in his soul, and see the hurt in his eyes! There are days, I can relate to him! BTW I am proud of you for adopting Mosh! I grew up with dogs and cats, been around them all my life. And I can tell you, in these dark days that consume me, my cat and my dog are the only true friends I have! I doubt that I would be still here without the 2 of them!

You need to listen to “Don’t Follow” by Alice In Chains from their album “Jar of Flies”

1:13 - I think that was Mike Starr’s acoustic bass you’re smelling.

This song is a love song from guitarist Jerry Cantrell to the love of his life Courtney Clarke.
Early pressings listed this as the 12th track on the album. Later pressings listed this as the 4th track, supposedly to better fit the band’s desire for the album to tell a loose story from song to song.
