Therapist reacts to Alice in Chains Nutshell

As amazing as this song was wrote by Lane , Ryan Upchurch version unplugged was absolutely amazing. Everyone should give it a listen.

I saw them in 1993 at their peak. On the opening riff a light was shone behind them onto a large sheet, they were large exaggerated shadows. Layne walks out last, the crowd goes nuts and he just puts a peace sign up with one hand before they went into Dam That River. I have seen pretty much every big group in my 52 years, but for some reason I obviously will always remember that moment. Before the web you never saw much of these bands, only their video on MTV , espeically in remote parts of the country so they were sort of unreal to see in person.

If you want to hear a song about being the guy losing all his mates to this, then “Far Behind” by Candlebox is a must.

Candlebox were a key part of the Seattle grunge scene that all these bands, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains etc came from. Singer Kevin Martin wrote it to mourn the loss of his friend Andrew Wood (lead man of Mother Love Bone, who would become Pearl Jam) to addiction, but became more true over time as he lost more of his friends and contemporaries to the same problem.

The bass in this song is AMAZING.

One thing that always bothers me with this song (although I’m a huge AIC fans and I love this performance) is that people can be so sensitive and understanding about what he’s going through, and then turn around and have no compassion at all for all the people in their own families/towns/etc. that are going through exactly the same things. If you feel for Layne and his struggle, you should feel the guy next door that has the same struggle. Addiction is not a moral failing.

Never listened to AIC?! Best band ever.

You randomly popped up in my feed a couple weeks ago, and I instantly became a huge fan. You really do make me smile at a point in my life where that rarely happens. You’ve really got me considering trying therapy again, too. You’re a beautiful soul, thank you for what you do.

I literally just posted on your last video requesting this song! Hoping to have my masters in psychology wrapped up in a few more years. Love the work this channel is doing.

I’ve definitely been here. So depressed I was content to live out my life completely miserable and alone. I in fact COULD NOT do that and ended up strung out for 3 months in 2020 and 3 months in 2022. Thankfully I got my mind right after that and spent a year in rehab. Now I’m over 2 years fentanyl free. I still deal with some anxiety but my depression is miles better than it used to be. I still deal with it some, mostly situationally. Thank you God. I love Alice too. They scratch an it for me in terms of their musicianship but their lyrics are altogether too relatable. Think it’s safe to say they’re in my top 3 bands of all time.

ACTION STEPS.
Take them.
It’s a must.

Layne did live another 6 years but this was 1 of his last concerts, after his last AIC show later that year(after he OD’d after a show) he stopped touring & then his ex-fiance died which really messed up Layne & for the next 6 years he became a recluse only doing drugs & playing video games until he OD’d/died in 2002, he was so alone that it took 2 weeks for someone to find his body. AIC are a great band that you should check out more

Layne was gone. In a Nutshell

“Dont Follow” is another one to give you the feels.

i know you enjoy maynard and tool , did you know maynard was close to layne and alice in chains . they played together several times. two great bands and two great voices .

if you decide to check out more from this unplugged set (the entire thing is fantastic), the track “got me wrong” showcases the harmony between layne and jerry beautifully and shows a different part of laynes voice not present in this one. RIP to a legend

He was in a supergroup called Mad Season. They did a song called Wake Up. It was about his addiction and life. And it’s beautiful.

A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras please. Saved this trans persons life.

If anyone wonders what it really feels like to be utterly consumed by depression and horrifically addicted to drugs…
It’s a hundred times worse than you could imagine.

“I’ve never listened to Alice in Chains before” “It sounds like its going to be a sad one” Yep, welcome to the depression pit
