We will rationalize, explain, say things like “if they just did x”, or “if only this didn’t happen”, all of this is in the name of maintaining or creating a connection. We will often try to convince others (and ourselves) that this relationship is possible, when the truth is our controlling and striving is actually furthering disconnection and deepening heartbreak. Letting go, and giving up on making the pieces fit, is one of the most challenging things we will do in our lives, but it’s a gift, because if these pieces don’t fit and we allow them to fall apart then we are free to find the pieces that DO fit.
